Same Name, Similar Body Type, but Revolutionary Powertrain: That’s the new Renault Scenic E-Tech 100% electric. This is a family MPV, technologically based on the older electric Mégane. We tested it as part of our standard editorial test.
Spacious Interior
Renault hasn’t shied away from significant investments in electromobility and has introduced several electric cars over recent years. Since their beginnings, they’ve made substantial strides not only in their looks but especially in how they drive. The French carmaker offers more than just practical cars; they also have style-oriented models. While leaving aside the Twizy, we’re talking about the new Renault 5, eagerly awaiting its debut on the Czech market.
However, let’s focus on the family model: the Scenic. The new electric car inherits a familiar name that Renault has used for decades. It has always been a family MPV, and this time is no different, although it positions itself between an SUV, a crossover, and an MPV. It offers a five-door body and a five-seat arrangement with a standard trunk capacity of 475 liters (with rear seatbacks folded, up to 1670 liters). There’s an additional 70 liters under the floor, perfect for storing charging cables.
It’s not exactly a large vehicle, measuring just under 4.5 meters in length, but because it’s an electric car, it offers significantly more interior space than similarly sized combustion vehicles. This is also reflected in its wheelbase of 2785 mm. The overhangs are minimal, increasing cabin space. Although the floor houses the batteries and there’s no need for a central tunnel for exhaust systems or all-wheel drive mechanisms, Renault opted to include one at the front, where it features storage compartments for a phone, wallet, drinks, etc.
Interestingly, the gear selector is not on the center console (as seen in some Škoda electric models); instead, it’s positioned on the right-hand side of the steering column. While it’s a good idea, Renault’s execution is still confusing. Alongside the gear selector, there are two additional levers for windshield wipers and multimedia controls. Having three levers is simply too much, and they get in the way. On the left, there’s just one lever for indicators and high beams.
The front seats offer plenty of space even for taller passengers, can be electrically adjusted, heated, and even have a massage function. The rear seats have a 40:20:40 split configuration but cannot be moved or adjusted. However, there’s a center armrest that folds down from the middle seatback. This armrest includes standard cup holders and a special holder for a tablet or phone, plus two USB-C connectors.
Familiar Powertrain
The Renault Scenic E-Tech 100% electric is powered by the same electric drivetrain as the Renault Mégane E-Tech 100% electric, but it comes with a larger battery offering a usable capacity of 87 kWh, resulting in a longer range. For reference, the battery weighs 515 kilograms and is located in the floor under the passengers, lowering the vehicle’s center of gravity. Power is delivered exclusively to the front wheels, a somewhat uncommon solution for electric vehicles, and no all-wheel-drive version is offered.
What does this increased range mean in concrete numbers? Renault claims a homologated range of 606 to 625 kilometers on a single charge (depending on the trim). If your battery runs out of juice, you can recharge it at fast-charging stations at speeds up to 150 kW. According to Renault, a 15% to 80% recharge takes about 37 minutes at a 130 kW charger.
When planning long trips using the car’s Google-based infotainment navigation system, the Scenic calculates ideal charging stops to get you to your destination quickly. Sometimes, instead of one long charge, it may suggest multiple shorter stops since charging to full capacity isn’t efficient and isn’t ideal for battery longevity.
The vehicle’s claimed energy consumption ranges between 16.8 and 17.3 kWh/100 km (depending on the trim). Achieving these numbers is realistic for urban driving with effective recuperation (its intensity is adjustable). Over a test week with highway usage, where speeds were close to maximum limits, we averaged around 20 kWh/100 km. During the test, temperatures hovered around freezing, but every Scenic destined for the Czech Republic comes standard with a heat pump.
Driving Comfort is Surprising
How does the electric Scenic drive? The test car came equipped with stylish 20-inch wheels, which are standard on the top-spec Iconic trim. If you prefer smaller wheels, you can opt for 19-inch wheels (standard for lower Evolution and Techno trims). Despite the larger wheels, the Scenic remains comfortable and smooth on the road. The suspension easily handles both quality and bumpy roads with potholes and imperfections.
In terms of dynamics, the power is more than adequate. It’s driven by an electric motor with 160 kW (220 hp) and 300 Nm of torque. According to technical specifications, it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.9 seconds, and its top speed is 170 km/h. The car responds instantly to throttle inputs, whether accelerating or decelerating through regenerative braking. Driving remains smooth and nearly effortless. There’s even a Sport mode for more engaging dynamics.
Being a modern vehicle, it comes equipped with all required driving assistance systems, such as lane-keeping assist and intelligent speed assistance. However, Renault allows drivers to customize these systems through the “My Perso” mode, which stores personalized preferences. All systems are active by default upon start-up, but a double press of a button to the left of the steering wheel enables your preferred setup.
Conclusion and Pricing
The Renault Scenic E-Tech 100% electric is not only a good electric car but an overall solid family vehicle. It features a comfortable suspension, a quiet cabin, and a spacious interior. While its energy consumption isn’t class-leading and charging could be quicker, its large battery allows for long trips exceeding 400 kilometers. Inside, passengers can enjoy high-quality audio, massaging seats, and smooth, powerful performance.
However, pricing might be a concern compared to newer competitors like the Škoda Elroq and the Kia EV3. Take a look at the comparison table below:
